Effective strategies

If an embarrassing situation does arise, establish what the problem is, then act to correct the difficulty as quickly as possible. Don’t ridicule the person. Show respect for the person’s viewpoint. This is important when working in a team.

Effective strategies

English is not always your colleague’s first language. Giving simple instructions when preparing for restaurant service.
Inappropriate verbal communications for example use of jargon and Australian colloquialisms.
Ensure clear instructions are given slowly for the other person to understand.
Ensure there is not other interference from the surrounding environment when giving instructions.
Allow adequate time for them to take notes.
Ask them to carry out procedure so you can see they have understood.
Learn by your mistakes when something has not worked—consider why.
Religious beliefs
Customs, obligations and commitments to extended family members that may affect a colleague’s availability to work.
Talk to friends and colleagues. Contact different associations, religious centres or community clubs and incorporate into group meetings to educate.
Methods of problem solving
Levels of formality or informality in reference to how the colleague views a supervisor. When dealing with problems they may
not seek assistance from the supervisor or refer to a senior staff member to resolve a conflict when it is most appropriate.
Support the individual’s approach and encourage them to consider approaching problems from a group perspective.
Use regular meetings to provide the time and place to present and resolve problems.
