Handle chemicals safely
Take a moment to think about where you
store chemicals at your home. Do you have a
special area set aside for them? Are there certain principles that
you follow or safety precautions you take when
you use chemicals around your home? This may not be very different to how they
are stored and handled in the workplace.

Answer the following questions to test
your knowledge of safe cleaning and chemical handling.
- Describe what ‘caustic’ and
‘corrosive’ cleaning agents.
- State the safety measures that should be taken
when using these cleaning agents.
- List five recommendations for the storage and
security of chemicals and cleaning
agents.
- You are cleaning a kitchen at the end of the
day with another member of staff. She opens a tin of caustic oven cleaner and
accidentally inhales some vapour from the tin. She says she feels sick and
dizzy. What should you do?
- A colleague accidentally splashes liquid
detergent in his eye. What should you
do?
