Create a portfolio

Use hospitality industry information sources and basic research skills (including identification of relevant information, questioning techniques to obtain information, sort and summarise the information).

The portfolio can also be used to collect sufficient evidence that may include documentation of your prior experience and/or learning as it is currently taking place.

If you work in the industry or during your work experience, you can collect evidence that you can add to your portfolio.

This type of portfolio may be used for assessment of competence.

• The evidence is current.

• The evidence for the portfolio that is directly relevant has been assembled to clearly demonstrate the critical elements in the unit(s) of competence as listed. Note: Not every element and specific performance criterion has to be matched, as some may be included with other tasks completed.

• A range of evidence is provided. The same piece of evidence may be used at several relevant opportunities if it demonstrates your competence.

• Any training certification and qualifications need to be validated and equivalence(s) obtained. You may want to use this for credit transfer.

• Original documents should not be provided in the portfolio. Documents are retained by the assessor so important items should be photocopied and the clearly legible copy signed by a Justice of the Peace who has sighted the original. This is a standard TAFE procedure.

• Audio-visual material such as video recordings or other multi-media examples may be included if authenticated; however you must discuss this with the assessor. Ensure that it is your work that is being demonstrated here and the material is directly relevant to the unit(s) of competence in the portfolio.

• Where photographs are included, a brief annotation of each frame must be provided.

• The evidence must be sufficient to allow the assessor to make a judgement.

• The evidence must provide both the final outcomes (e.g. procedure manuals, cleaning & maintenance programs, detailed function/banquet sheets with menu, wine list, work schedules and client’s agreement) AND the processes (e.g. your demonstration of work skills).
