| ACT Tourism | A government organisation responsible for giving advice and information to all travellers to the Australian Capital Territory. |
| Anti-discrimination legislation | Laws that seek to eliminate discrimination such as workplace discrimination. |
| Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) | A federal government organisation collecting and publishing statistics on any economic, social or environmental issues to assist all sectors of the Australian Government, business and community to plan more effectively. |
| Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) | An industry association for Australian travel agents. |
| Australian Tourism Commission (ATC) | A government organisation whose objective is to increase both domestic Australian tourism and inbound tourism. |
| Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) | A government organisation promoting the export of tourism. Note that inbound tourism is an export, as it is a product sold overseas, and foreign exchange income is earned when visitors exchange their currency for Australian dollars. |
| Bureau of Tourism Research (BTR) | A federal government organisation collecting & publishing tourism statistics to assist all sectors of the tourism industry, government and community to plan for economic and sustainable tourism. |
| CBD hotels | Hotels that are located in the Central Business District of a city. |
| Consumer protection | Laws that protect clients when they purchase services such as tourism, so that they receive the equivalent of what they've paid for. |
| Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO) | An industry association for Australian Tour Wholesalers and Tour Operators. |
| Discretionary income | When the basic needs of a person are met from their income, this is the remainder that can be spent on travel or leisure at their discretion. |
| Domestic Tourist | A person who travels within their own country |
| Duty of Care | Legislation of duty of care that makes tourism organisations responsible for protecting consumers against any fraud, misrepresentation or unethical practices by recommending only reputable tourism products. |
| Ecotourism Association of Australia (EAA) | An industry association for Australian tour organisations primarily operating in ecotourism areas. |
| Educational trip | A trip or visit sponsored by a tourism organisation for tourism employees to experience first-hand their products &/or services. Also referred to as a familiarisation trip. |
| Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) | Legislation in the workplace promoting the idea of the best person for the job without discrimination. |
| Fair Trading Act | Under the Travel Agents Act 1986, all Travel Agents and Tour Operators must hold a licence. In NSW, the licensing authority is the Department of Fair Trading (previously known as the Consumer Protection Agency). |
| Familiarisation trip | A trip or visit sponsored by a tourism organisation for tourism employees to experience first-hand their products &/or services. Also referred to an educational trip. |
| Formal Research | The systematic collection of new information. It is usually carried out by specialist research organisations. Also referred to a primary research. |
| Gross Domestic Product (GDP) | A measure of the value of a country's economy. |
| Inbound Tour Operator (ITO) | A company that organises travel for inbound tourists. |
| Inbound Tourist | A traveller that has come from another country. |
| Industrial Agreement | An agreement negotiated collectively between employer and employee representatives that sets out minimum working conditions and terms, and pay rates for a specific industry or sector |
| Informal Research | Research obtained by accessing information already gathered by other organisations. Also referred to as secondary research. |
| Intangible products | Products that cannot be touched, e.g. a holiday or insurance. |
| International Air Transport Association (IATA) | A worldwide industry association for airline operators. |
| Interstate Tourist | A tourist who travels from their own state to another state. |
| Intrastate Tourist | A tourist who travel within their own state. |
| Leakage Effect | Refers to the loss of earnings to the Australian economy if all or most of an inbound tourist's spending in Australia leaks back overseas. |
| Meetings Industry Association of Australia (MIAA) | An industry association for Australian organisations operating Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Events. |
| Multiplier Effect | The flow of spending through a community from tourism activities. |
| Northern Territory Tourist Commission | A government organisation responsible for giving advice and information to all travellers to the Northern Territory. |
| Occupational Health Safety & Security (OH&S) | Legislation defining the roles and responsibilities for management and staff for the implementation and maintenance of health, safety and security. |
| Outbound Tour Operator | A company that organises travel for outbound tourists. |
| Outbound Tourist | A person who travels out of their country to another country. |
| Package Tours | A combination or tourism services, such as flights, transfers, accommodation and sightseeing, packaged into one product for a total price. Usually developed by Tour Wholesalers and promoted via a brochure or flyer distributed to Retail Travel Agents for sale to the general public. |
| Product launch | When a Tour Wholesaler or Supplier launches a new or updated product onto the market. |
| Quality assurance | The assurance that clients receive a consistently high level of quality service. |
| Queensland State Tourism | A government organisation responsible for giving advice and information to all travellers to Queensland. |
| South Australian Tourist Commission | A government organisation responsible for giving advice and information to all travellers to South Australia. |
| Sustainable tourism development | Achieving a balance between tourism development and the protection of the natural environment for use and enjoyment by future generations. |
| Tangible products | Products that can be touched or felt, eg a tourism souvenir. |
| Tasmania Tourism | A government organisation responsible for giving advice and information to all travellers to Tasmania. |
| Tourism Destination Region/s (TDR) | The town, city or country visited by a traveller (can be more than one place). |
| Tourism Forecasting Council (TFC) | A government organisation responsible for gathering research and statistics to forecast tourism statistics and trends, to assist tourism organisations to develop long- range plans. |
| Tourism NSW | A government organisation responsible for giving advice and information to all travellers to New South Wales. |
| Tourism Victoria | A government organisation responsible for giving advice and information to all travellers to Victoria. |
| Tourist Generating Region (TGR) | The town city or country that is a traveller's home. |
| Trade Practices Act | The Trade Practices Act 1974 is legislation requiring services be given with due care and skill, and prohibits fraudulent business practices. |
| Western Australia Tourism | A government organisation responsible for giving advice and information to all travellers to Western Australia. |
