In December 1997 the Government released its industry policy statement, Investing for Growth. Action agendas were one of the major initiatives announced in this industry policy statement. The primary focus of Action agendas is to address the impediments to specific industry sectors achieving their growth potential. They also offer an opportunity to create long term sustainable competitive advantage by identifying the actions necessary to lift the innovative and knowledge creating capacity at the sector level.

Read page 5 of the Industry Policy Framework and record the two ways the Australian Government aims to strengthen industry competitiveness for the future. What will this mean for the TCF Industry in the future?

Activity 2

On the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources Selecting this link will take you to an external site. home page, select the menu box All ITR fact sheets then select the highlighted by industry and sector. Scroll and select Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF). By referring to the fact sheet answer the following question.

  1. Explain the significance of the Australian textiles, clothing, footwear and leather (TCFL) industries in Australia's economy. List the reasons why the (TCFL) industries occupy a key position in Australia's economic and social landscape.

The TCFL Action Agenda Advisory Board submitted its report to the Minister on 23 March 2000. On 23 May 2000, the Government approved the TCFL Action Agenda for implementation.

Activity 3
