Learning activity 1: Design task
Experience the fun of colour selection and coordination
within the home environment. Go to http://www.dulux.com.au/
and select the My Colour tutorial. This may
take 2–3 minutes to load.
Choose either a living area or bedroom to decorate.
- Experiment with the various design options possible,
for example,
- choose colours for furnishings and paint surfaces from
a variety of colour palettes
- see how a room looks from a number of different angles
and with or without furniture
- see the impact on colours from different lighting
conditions, i.e. in both daylight and night light
- choose the type of flooring you prefer: carpet, tiles
or timber.
- You have now experienced some of the activities
associated with the role of an interior decorator.
Brainstorm a list of tasks that an interior decorator would
need to do at work.
Learning activity 2: Career related research
The Dulux web page designers have received so
many positive comments about their My Colour
tutorial that they have decided to extend their web site by
including career information.
Design and write a career profile that could be included
on the Dulux web site. Include the following
information:
- A brief job description.
- Duties and tasks

Duties and tasks
Interior decorators may perform the following tasks:
- advise clients on the selection of colour schemes,
layout, lighting, furniture, floor coverings, curtains,
paint, wallpaper and hardware products, e.g. curtain
fittings
- provide sketch designs, specifications and cost
estimates to the client for approval
- supervise and coordinate the installation and
arrangement of furniture and furnishings
- visit clients' premises to look at existing
conditions and make measurements
- be involved in direct selling if working in a retail
shop.
Work conditions
Interior decorators may sometimes have to work extended or
irregular hours to meet clients' needs.
