Name: Beth Hatton
Current position: Weaver
What does the position involve?
Everything! This is the ultimate in multi skilling. Not only do I design and produce the work but I also promote and market it by looking for exhibitions, writing proposals, compiling portfolios etc.
What advice would you give to a Year 12 student considering pursuing a similar career?
Don't even consider it unless you are passionately devoted to the expression of ideas through visual means and are well endowed with the qualities of patience and perseverance.
Find a good tertiary arts course to gain skills and develop a sense of the field as a whole. Visit galleries regularly and read journals and newsletters to keep yourself informed of new developments and opportunities. Develop yourself in the broader sense through films, books, music so that you increasingly have something worth saying to the world through your art.
What do you see are the future directions of your industry?
One, moving closer to the fine arts, increasingly becoming a vehicle for significant ideas about life around us.
Two, moving closer to design making with the textile industry by weaving prototypes for industrial production.
