Personal Identity:
Sample reading and responding task answers
- Name four activities Carla used to do during her
childhood holidays.
Any four of the following:
Play with a friend, ride a bicycle, take picnics amongst
the pine trees, go horse riding, go swimming, go to the
beach and visit grandparents.
- What special family times are associated with
Carla’s holidays?
Holidays are associated with family time because Carla
visited her grandparents during that time “época de compartir con los
abuelos” and also it was during the holidays
that she went on long drives with her family “largos viajes en el auto
familiar”.
- Why do summer holidays represent such a milestone
in Carla’s adolescence?
Summer holidays were milestones because during this time
Carla fell in love for the first time, and also it was
during one of her holidays that she suffered her first
romantic heart break.
- How effective is this text in conveying
Carla’s holiday experiences?
This text is effective in conveying Carla’s
experiences because the writer provides images which are
associated with happy memories and events of her childhood
“la toalla estaba siempre a mano
junto a la bici” “la piscina” “el
mar”. Also the writer creates mental images
which evoke sensations and feelings, such as the flavour of
banana milk, the feeling of peach juice running along
Carla’s arms or the sensation of cold water melon.
All these create visual images which the reader could
relate to and could compare to his/her own experiences.
Also the choice of language supports the images happiness
and freedom. Linguistic items such as “me hace feliz”
“gozo” “maravillosa
sensación” communicate to the reader the
happiness Carla is feeling. The sense of freedom is
expressed in phrases such as “meses de libertad” “sin
preocuparme del despertador” etc. Finally the
use of exclamation marks “¡por fin…!”
“¡lo vamos a pasar…!” helps
to emphasise how much the writer is looking forward to the
upcoming holiday.
