Sample listening task answers
- What prediction is made in the article about the
future of the Earth?
The predictions made for the future are that fertile lands
will become deserts and the instances of skin cancer will
multiply early in the twentyfirst century. The sea level
will rise by one metre and a half, overflowing onto the
coastal lands and reducing them in size.
- How do people contribute to the greenhouse
effect?
Each day people contribute to the greenhouse effect by
starting a car or by using a deodorant in an aerosol can.
- What effect do carbon dioxide and aerosols have on
the atmosphere and how does this contribute to the number
of skin cancer cases?
Carbon dioxide and aerosol affect the atmosphere by
destroying the ozone layer. The gases which are produced
create the “greenhouse effect”. The heat from
the sun is retained by the Earth, causing large masses of
ice from the polar regions to melt; this liquid flows into
the seas and oceans, making the water levels rise. The
ultraviolet rays increase the risk of skin cancer and
cause, along with the heat, considerable damage to the
environment.
- What predictions are made in relation to the
average temperatures of the world?
It is predicted that the average temperature will increase
by half a degree within the next decade and between two to
four degrees after the following decade. Towards the year
2030, the temperature is predicted to have increased by
three to eight degrees.
- How will the Earth be affected by this ecological
disaster?
As a result of global warming, the agriculture of most
countries will be affected resulting in widespread famine.
As the world’s food requirements are expected to
double by the year 2030, the outlook is grim.
