A guided tour of the visible human Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
Containing over 18 000 digital images of mainly MRI scans of the human body, this extremely interesting website is an excellent resource when teaching various aspects of human anatomy. The site is colourful and easy to navigate. It contains numerous animations and these are richly supported with basic information. Although human anatomy is not required in depth by the Science 7-10syllabus, much of the material presented could be used for extension. MRI scans are also a clear example when teaching outcome 4.12 on uses of technology that have made tasks easier. Senior Science Stage 6 students completing the Topic: Medical technology - bionics will find these examples of non-invasive diagnostic techniques relevant. As all pictures are actual scans of cadavers, teachers are advised to preview this site before general classroom use. I. Mavin

Aqua: project science Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
Containing detailed information from the NASA satellite collecting data about Earth's water cycle, the site would be useful when studying the hydrosphere in Science 7-10. Teachers would need to simplify the terminology. A variety of information is being collected on conditions of evaporation, clouds, vapour, precipitation, ice and snow. The site includes diagrams to show how the data is being collected. A newsroom presents regular updates and details significant events such as hurricanes. The reference area contains colour fact sheets, brochures, and a photographic gallery. Language, style and format are suitable for senior students, and relevant to the Senior Science Stage 6 Module: Water for living, and the Biology Stage 6 Module: Patterns in nature. A. Frost

Australia's threatened species - key text Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
Although this site is concerned with both flora and fauna, it is useful for the Plants content area in the Senior Science: Stage 6 syllabus as it addresses such issues as: threats to endangered species; and why we should try to prevent species loss. The information Boxes on Australia's biodiversity and Survival of the cutest? are also worth using, especially the latter which questions attitudes about the sorts of species that need to be protected. Although the suggested Activities require written responses, they provide good stimulus material and the associated teachers' notes are helpful. This site would provide a good starting point for discussion on protection of our native flora. R. Dircks

RIC's bionic medicine program featured in the New Yorker Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
Showcasing the work of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, this website provides several useful links for students undertaking work on biomedical devices used to replace damaged body parts in the Senior Science Stage 6 Core: Medical technology - bionics. Site material provides excellent state of the art examples of science using modern technology to its fullest degree, and it is a fine resource when working towards outcomes on assessing the contributions of scientific advances on the development of technologies. The most useful section for students is in Dr. Kuiken's lab at RIC, NECAL. Here, various videos are ideal for use on an IWB or data projector as stimulus material when beginning this topic. Although much of the site's written text will be above the level of Stage 6 students, the photographs demonstrating advances in bionics are very useful stimulus material. I. Mavin

Soil salinity Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
The discussion of the types and causes of salinity makes this site very appropriate for the Caring for the country content area in the Earth and Environmental Science: Stage 6 syllabus . The main text includes information on monitoring salinity that is interesting, but perhaps not particularly useful for most students. However, the additional information on Salinisation - causes and prevention is excellent. The highlighted glossary words make it very easy for students to check on unfamiliar terms, although straightforward language is used throughout the site. Links to related sites are provided, however these will need to be checked for curriculum relevance. R. Dircks

Total knee replacement Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
There are many sites for users of biomaterials or biomedical devices and this one is solely devoted to total knee replacements. The advantage of this site is the animated step by step explanation of the replacement procedure. This makes it possible for students studying Section 9.3 Medical Technology - Bionics to appreciate the complexity of the operation and to relate each step of the operation to the structure of the knee and techniques needed to introduce metals and synthetic materials to the body. The illustrations are clear and well labelled. Alternatively, students could use the Education section to link to a similarexplanation of the Total hip replacement procedure. R. Dircks
