Creating Space Probe Seven

Anyone who has visited Australia's Wonderland will not have been able to resist testing their nerves by riding Space Probe Seven. Most of the multimedia illusions and special effects used in the ride are computer controlled. The language chosen for this task was Delphi.

Syllabus outcomes

H1.2 A student differentiates between various methods used to construct software solutions.
H3.1 A student identifies and evaluates legal, social and ethical issues in a number of contexts.

This article provides a case study of software development for a given scenario and can be used to compare with the Klik and Play case study (SDD syllabus, p.34). It also provides stimulus material for discussion concerning the characteristics of the software market today. (SDD syllabus, p. 32)

Read through the article. As you do try to identify the stages of the software development process undertaken and the reasons for any critical decisions. Note also the role other agencies or programmers had in the development. Click here to download the article.

Activity

  1. Identify which software development approach (SDD syllabus, p.34) was used here and give reasons for your answer.
  2. Construct a table showing what action was undertaken in each of the stages of the software development process.
  3. Many students will be considering a project containing multimedia for their HSC. This article gives some clear reasons why the development team chose Delphi rather than Visual Basic. Can you identify them?
  4. This article claims that computer based multimedia shows will become increasingly popular, particularly in response to the user's demand to be entertained.
Do you agree or not? Make sure you can quote some evidence to support your point of view.
