The packaging and wrapping of the merchandise is an important function in the sales process. It is here that team members are in a position to make a final impression with the customer. If the customer is to remember the experience as a pleasurable one, the final wrapping or packaging of the merchandise must be appropriate and professionally carried out.
What is appropriate packaging is largely determined by the merchandise itself, but also the final destination of the merchandise is an important consideration. For example, if a customer purchases a set of crystal glasses that are pre-packaged in a box, then simply bagging the box may be enough. However, if the customer wants to have the package sent to a home address for delivery via courier, further packaging would be required to protect the contents during transit.
Most stores pack and wrap goods at the point-of-sale, however some larger items may be packaged in a different location, for example the loading dock. Team members need to ensure they have adequate wrapping and packaging materials at the point-of-sale. These consumables must be replenished daily to ensure customers are not left waiting whilst team members locate suitable materials.
