Professional Association

Society and Culture Association (SCA)

The SCA provides a forum for discussion of issues relating to the Society and Culture course, resources for teaching and learning, a professional journal, professional development activities for teachers and Personal Interest Project and HSC study days for students.

The association produces a journal called Culturescope. Some archival material from Culturescope can be accessed on the SCA web site. Subscriptions and back issues can be obtained from the SCA. Culturescope is the only purpose designed resource for the Society and Culture course. Articles have been written by teachers, students and academics and cover all aspects of the syllabus.

Textbooks

Howitt, B & Julian, R (2002), Heinemann Society and Culture, Heinemann, Port Melbourne.

This text covers both the preliminary and HSC courses. It provided very good coverage of the course concepts with relevant and useful case studies and examples. The text is designed to be a starting point or building block for the subject.

Lovat, T (ed.) (2000), New Society and Culture, 2nd edition, Social Sciences Press, Katoomba.

The second edition has been revamped to make it more useful and relevant to the new Stage 6 syllabus.
