Geography and the workplace

Outcome H7 is about " justifying geographical methods applicable and useful in the workplace...” Additionally, in each of the "Students learn to:" sections of the content of each course topic there are examples given of geographical methods which are used in different sorts of professional occupations. Studying HSC Geography can prepare you for life after school and for future employment, as well as being interesting for its own sake.

There are two ways of demonstrating your understanding of how geography relates to the workplace. One is to be familiar with the examples of geographical methods provided in each course topic, for example, knowing about the relevance and significance of geographic information systems (GIS), satellite imagery and aerial photography.

The other way is to learn about the work done by particular professional people and how a knowledge of geography, helps them in their work, for example how the work of an urban planner or heritage site manager or environmental impact consultant draws on a knowledge of geography and geographical methods.
