The Internet gives students access to a vast resource of original language texts for their language studies. They can access current newspapers and magazines from countries all around the world on a regular basis and the rich, multimedia environment provides useful learning support by presenting material in text, images and audio files.
English literature students too benefit from the vast resource of digitized texts now available online. Digital versions of texts make it possible for students to investigate a text by quickly running a concordance and investigating the frequency of words so that they can compare all the contexts in which the word is used. This often gives special insights into the particular meanings of a text and into its characteristic language.
The online environment has itself created new genres of text which take advantage of the multimedia nature of the medium and its nonlinearity. It has also facilitated the process of collaborative writing between students in different locations.
