Maths at work 2 – Carting water
Answers
- Volume of the tank on the back of the truck.
Volume = length × width × height
= 1.9 × 1.5 × 1.4
=
3.99 m³
- Water capacity of the tank on the truck
Capacity = 3.99 × 100
= 3990
L
- Loads of water required to fill the tank on the dry block
Number of loads = 10 000 ÷ 3990
=
2.5
- Estimated daily water requirement of the herd.
Estimated water requirement = 80 × 50L/head
=
4000L per day
- After the large tank is filled, water will need to be carted
to the dry block once every second day, but topping the tank with one load
daily (3990L) will keep the large tank more than half full. It will also provide
enough water for one and a half extra days in case something happens to prevent
water being carted. For example, the truck could break down or all staff may
be urgently needed in other aspects of the enterprise.
