Maths at work 3 – Concrete calculations

You work for a landscape contractor who is designing an outdoor entertainment area for a customer. Part of the design requires a slab of concrete to be poured.

Diagram of proposed entertainment area with measurements

The contractor has given you the sketch above with some measurements of the proposed concrete slab. You have to calculate the perimeter and area of the slab. You have also been asked to calculate the volume of concrete that will need to be ordered. The slab will be 10cm (0.1m) thick.

  1. Print out the diagram.

  2. Calculate the circumference of the semi-circle.

  3. Mark the length of each side and the semi-circle on the diagram.

  4. Calculate the perimeter of the concrete slab.

  5. Calculate the area of the rectangle.

  6. Calculate the area of the semi-circle.

  7. Calculate the total area of the concrete slab.

  8. Calculate the volume of concrete that will need to be ordered. (You may need to round up the calculated volume to an amount which is reasonable to order.)
