What to do in an emergency

Farm workers often work by themselves or in small groups, so it is important to know what to do in an emergency.

It is vital to get help as quickly as possible.

If there is only person able to perform first aid, the decision has to be made whether to start resuscitation or go for help first. To make this decision, the casualty must first be assessed.

If the casualty is unconscious but breathing, they should be placed in the recovery position and then after this has been done the ambulance should be called.

If the casualty is unconscious and not breathing, they should be given resuscitation for one minute and then placed in the recovery position while the ambulance is called.

If there is more than one person able to perform first aid, the casualty should be assessed and one person should start resuscitation if required. The second person should call for an ambulance.
