Electrocution

Electrocution refers to the passage of an electrical current through the body, and can produce skin lesions, organ damage and death.

High current flow can cause entry and exit wounds where the current density is highest, but most of the damage is to the deep tissues which can be severely damaged by heat. Current flow through the heart may cause a cardiac arrest.

What to look for

Unconsciousness
Breathing may stop
Heart may stop (pulse absent)
Deep burns

What to do

Insulating material will not protect against high voltage currents. DO NOT approach the casualty if the power has not been cut off.

Manage any danger
For high voltage currents

stay well clear until the power is cut off. A fatal shock can be received up to ten metres away
notify emergency services.

Break the current

Switch off at the socket and pull the plug out.
If this is not possible, turn off the main switch at the fuse box.

Seek medical assistance.
