Crush injuries

A crush injury results when something large and heavy strikes or falls on a person.

Crush injury occurs when blood flow to a part of the body is stopped and the muscles beyond this point of compression release toxic chemicals into the blood. These toxins can cause sudden death through suppressed heart and lung function, shock and kidney failure.

Crush injuries are often very serious because of the damage they may cause, such as internal bleeding, fractured bones, ruptured organs and impaired circulation.
