Environmental weeds

Environmental weeds are plants that invade areas of natural ecosystems. They usually occur due to disturbance, increased nutrient loads and less competitive ground cover. They are mostly persistent plants that are easily spread via animals, machinery, wind, water and dumping.

Environmental weeds can quickly dominate the landscape. They compete successfully with desirable plants for water, nutrients and light and can prevent natural regeneration. Environmental weeds can reduce a farm’s stock carrying capacity and limit food and habitat areas available for native fauna.
