It is well known that good health is not shared by all Australians. There are different groups within our population that experience a greater burden of disease than others, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and rural and remote Australians. Health across Australia is a shared responsibility of the Commonwealth, State, Local Governments and private, non-profit and community organisations.
Sustainable improvements in health will depend on the long term commitment to adequate levels of funding and resourcing given to specific populations. Effective strategies and programs that address the social justice principles are fundamental to reducing health inequities.
