The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Inc. (ACHPER) has created a visually enticing Web site for those interested in gaining insight into their range of services for members and interested onlookers. There is a strong emphasis on professional development, such as the courses developed through State Associations. Of particular value to teachers is Bookshop, which profiles several resources for teachers and includes links to a nationwide mailing list and the complete catalogue. ACHPER's membership base extends beyond teaching. The site also offers material and activities which would best fit outside of traditional teaching interests, and may enhance opportunities for broadening one's range of experiences and opportunities. AIS sports nutrition Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) sports nutrition web site delivers a world class nutrition service to AIS sports and national teams. It features a wide range of resources to assist recreational and elite athletes, the general public, and students to stay up to date with the latest strategies in sports nutrition. Some excellent inclusions in the site are Recipes, Research, Fact sheets, Supplements, Information for school assignments and Links, which offers information from reputable organisations. Although aspects of nutrition are covered in the PDHPE syllabus from Early Stage 1 through to Stage 6, this site would be most beneficial to Stage 5 and Stage 6 students. It would be an excellent resource for investigating the critical question: How can nutrition affect performance? in HSC Core 2: Factors affecting performance. K. McCulloch

ASC Olympic fact sheets Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
Although print based, with few graphics, this site contains seventeen fact sheets, which adequately cover Olympic topics. These include: the history of ancient and modern Olympics; the Olympic tradition; world politics; the changing role of women; technology; drug testing; nutrition; and the Paralympics. Charts allow interesting comparisons to be made, for example between the medal tallies of men and women, although not all charts have a good print clarity. Selected fact sheets could have relevance to the Sport and physical activity in Australian society and Sports medicine (eg. Sports science and the Olympics) options in the PDHPE: Stage 6 syllabus (approved 1999). The extensive book list is not current, but there are links to other Internet sites that teachers may like to investigate. S. Leslie

Athletes against drugs - fit for life programs Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
An American site, this promotes and encourages communities to address the growing issues of adolescent drug use. The benefit of this site is in the information provided about processes needed to get communities and individuals to initiate personal action to avoid drug taking behaviours. The site is well presented and easy to navigate. It could support a case study of community action to develop a health promotion initiative. It is relevant to the PDHPE: Stage 6 syllabus (approved 1999): Preliminary core 2, Better health for individuals; and HSC core 1, Health priorities in Australia, as it could support students undertaking a comparative study of health promotion initiatives. Issues in drug education are addressed from the perspective of parents and care givers on this useful site. Teachers in welfare positions who are discussing drug related issues will also find information on this site valuable. It consists of a series of internal links to topics which include: Communication is essential; Peer pressure; Parties; Parents as role models; Warning signs for kids and drugs; and Identifying drugs and their symptoms. The identification and effects section is basic, and may need to be supplemented with more detailed information. The site is simply written, although the authors are not acknowledged. Better Health Channel Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
A wide coverage of health information, relevant across Australia, is outlined within this site. There are 1768 Fact sheets A-Z, containing single page information summaries relating to every conceivable health issue for PDHPE students. These are updated regularly. HSC students can elicit simple summaries, but they will gain much more complex and deeper knowledge from the links supplied throughout, such as the description of the Ottawa Charter. A lack of graphics will probably limit enthusiasm from the targeted audience, however, as a guided teaching tool for creating student directed learning techniques, this site would be a useful resource. Cancer Council New South Wales Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
Informative and well-written, this site is an excellent starting point for students researching cancer for the PDHPE Stage 6 Core: Health priorities in Australia. Cancer answers and All about cancer contain extensive and contemporary data about the various manifestations of cancer, and the latter pages have some very good graphics, for example, on breast cancer. Information depth and style is appropriate for junior students researching smoking and cancer links. Schools, children and community has a very useful collection of resources and information for teachers, including how to help students cope with cancer. As a source of information, the site is quite extensive, with various links to detail on the circulatory system components. Always aided by diagrams, the text is often complex, but offered in this medium, the student is visually encouraged to proceed and the overall presentation provides good motivation for students. Options in Back to the heart via Back to systems allow for further extension activities. How do you measure up? Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
ABSTRACT
In this new government campaign for better health, the website supports, and opens with, the television advertisement. The focus of the site is on the technique of waist measurement and on achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. The campaign does not use BMI. The site's main areas include Why measure up?, How do I measure myself? and Tips for getting active. These areas of the site support teaching and learning about health in PDHPE. What should I be eating? also supports the study of eating well for good health in Food Technology syllabuses. The resource has some quizzes, and interactive activities are planned. The site is not suitable for teaching the measurement of physical characteristics in schools. It is most suitable for teaching senior students about healthy food, as the site is aimed at adults.
