- From 70 to 150 beats per minute the
stroke volume of the heart increases gradually as the heart
rate rises. (The HR is an indication of exercise
intensity.) As the need for oxygen in the body increases,
the heart will not only beat faster but will also beat more
strongly. This increase in the strength of each heartbeat
is due to an increase in the amount of blood being pumped
with each contraction.
- From 150 to 180 beats per minute the
stroke volume of the heart reaches a plateau. This is
because the heart rate reaches a certain level and its
ability to stretch further is limited. It also has less
time to fill up before each beat, therefore stroke volume
cannot increase any further.
