How does the body respond to aerobic training?

Heart rate

The following graph shows how the heart rate (HR) changes during exercise. The vertical axis is the actual heart rate (in beats per minute) and the horizontal axis is the time (in minutes). Pre-exercise is represented by "minus" time. Zero onwards represents the time during exercise, whilst "plus" time indicates time in minutes post- exercise.

Examine the following graph and answer the questions in the student activity.

Analyse the graph and describe what happens to the heart rate (HR) at these points in time on the graph. Give an explanation for the change in heart rate.

  1. -3 to -2 minutes
  2. 0 to 1 minute
  3. 8 to 9 minutes
  4. 10 to +1 minutes
  5. +4 to +5 minutes
