Initiatives included:
Safer roads: upgrading of roads such as the introduction of dual carriageways, blackspot programs which target areas with high accident rates and roadside rest areas. Safer people: compulsory wearing of seatbelts, Random Breath Testing (RBT) and increased education was provided in New South Wales involving schools, communities, media campaigns, increased penalties for drink driving and reduction of speed limit. Safer vehicles: Antilock Braking System (ABS), airbags, crumple zones and Australian New Car Program (NCAP). Other circumstances include the recession in the mid to late 1980’s which decreased the number of motor vehicles on the road. |
