Developing your aural skills

Aural skills refer to your ability to discriminate between sounds and to make judgements about their use in a different musical styles, periods and genres.

Aural skills are also an integral part of performance, musicology and composition

Aural skills are essential when recognising, analysing and commmenting on the concepts of music.

The concepts of music

The concepts of music are duration, pitch, dynamics and expressive techniques, tone colour, texture and structure.

The concepts of music provide an overview of the musical understanding that you will need to develop and provide a way of talking about the abstract nature of music. The musical concepts are used in different ways in different styles of music.
