Chapters 7-12 provide clearly written summaries of the
main events of the war. A good range of sources, both
pictorial and written, support the skills sections at the
end of each chapter.

This book has a wealth of primary sources and many
suggestions to teachers for using the evidence. There is a
good chapter on essay writing and referencing in
history.

World War through Sources. Rigby Heinemenn, 1996.
An excellent new textbook that covers all relevant
topics and provides a detailed approach to answering the
Core using sources as evidence. Useful for both teachers
and students.

This book covers both the preliminary and HSC sections
of the course. Considerable detail and well
illustrated.

This book covers both the preliminary and HSC sections
of the course. It is particularly good on aspects of the
Home Front in Australia, Britain and Germany.
Swinton, J., The First World War. Longman,
1995.
This book examines the origins of the war, war on the
Western Front, the wider war and the home front (in
Britain, Germany and Australia). There are documentary
extracts and useful visual resources.
Winter, Dennis. Death's Men, Soldiers of the Great
War. Penguin Books, 1978.
One of the best general books on the Great War. Winter
looks very closely at the experiences of those who fought
in the British Army. Excellent material, particularly on
weapons and trench life.
