  1. What are Maria’s impressions of Greece? (3 marks)
    Maria was impressed with her holiday, particularly her island. She met her family for the first time and saw many sights.

  2. Discuss the reasons the grandfather left Greece. (3 marks)
    The grandfather left Greece as a result of the war. The living conditions were unbearable, there was no work and he left for a better future.

  3. Explain the conditions the grandfather faced when he first arrived in Australia.(4 marks)
    Initially the grandfather found it very difficult to adjust. He could not find work because of his lack of English. He also felt isolated and was homesick.

  4. What social phenomenon in Greece does the grandfather find interesting?(3 marks)
    Greece has become a destination for many migrants, particularly in Athens and Thessaloniki. Maria wonders how these people will survive.

  5. Evaluate the grandfather’s personality as seen in this text. (5 marks)
    The grandfather is kind and caring towards his granddaughter as seen by the language used: “αχ κοριτσάκι μου’’, “καλώς τη Μαρία μου”. He has an amiable disposition which allows the granddaughter to confide in him e.g.: “Μα γιατί παππού; δεν καταλαβαίνω… τι θες να πεις;”
    The grandfather is also resilient and capable of overcoming difficulties faced when first arriving in Australia. He is compassionate and understanding of the plight of others. As a migrant himself, he hopes that migrants in Greece can also succeed.
