About New Zealand 
A comprehensive site on all aspects
of life in New Zealand, this resource is possibly the best NZ website for
NSW schools. It is a most useful tool for student researchers. Information
is displayed as a very easy to navigate directory of annotated websites,
leading to interesting and detailed pages which make good use of Q&A.
The site is extremely easy to navigate, but it is large, making the search
facility a very useful tool in directing students to the exact information
required. About NZ is also a good place to begin research. This site is particularly
useful for the Legal Studies Optional Focus Study: Indigenous peoples,
the Society and Culture study of Social and cultural continuity and change
in a selected country, and the Geography Elective Focus Area: Australia’s
neighbours. The site’s material is also well worth investigation by

Sponsored by numerous national and state bodies, this site provides information
concerning technology crimes. Of interest to Legal Studies students completing
the Focus Study: Crime, this site has links to major crime gathering sources
within Australia. Easy to navigate, these links give an outline of the source,
including relevant legislation concerning crime where technology plays a
major role. Links allow students to investigate a range of information relevant
to the Focus Study in the Areas: Key legal concepts and features of the legal
system; Legal issues and remedies; and Law reform. Media resources are current
and listed by topic and date, making them a valuable student resource. The
web site provides a useful snapshot of one area of the Crime component, while
providing numerous links to others, without students having to scan reams

Rights Centre
Legal Studies students should find this site particularly
helpful for the study of Law and society. This
University of New South Wales (UNSW) research institute
presents a comprehensive collection of human rights
documentation, as well as access to an online database offering
issues from the Australian Journal of Human Rights,
Uniya, and the Human Rights Defender. It
provides a detailed account of developments in international
human rights treaties, decisions and standards, and describes
Australia’s ratification of significant treaties. The
site offers access to key treaties through the
Australian Treaties Library and provides
information on refugee law. Online human rights issues of the
Hot Topics series are an invaluable resource for

by AIATSIS. All resources are listed for content and cultural
access and are cross referenced. The site also gives you access

This is a very useful site for the Legal Studies Focus Study: Crime. To locate contemporary articles on a range of issues pertinent to their studies, students should enter trends and issues into Search. This reveals a rewarding report on Trends and issues in crime and criminal justice. An article within, on Consumer scams in Australia: an overview, will be of interest to Commerce 7–10 students. Information and advice on the issue of privacy and the law is
provided at this easily navigated site. In Federal
Privacy Law 1988 the consequences of
misuse of information are detailed. This site also contains
specific information on IT and Internet
issues, individual rights to privacy and links to
privacy laws in other countries. Students would be able to
develop an understanding of the social and ethical issues of
the privacy of the individual through appropriate use of this
site. By relating the information directly to the

syllabus, students could create their own guidelines for

Updated and improved, this large site has much material that is well organised and categorised for student researchers. All the important documents and reports can be found here, including the Indigenous health campaign and Social justice reports, which show means to address disadvantage. International indigenous rights will be useful for this aspect of study within Aboriginal Studies syllabuses. In Publications, a solid collection of educational resources includes the Us Taken-Away Kids magazine and the Bringing them home education module 2007, with personal stories and excellent notes on Jane Harris’ play Stolen. The Information sheet gives some background to the concept of social justice and it is a very good summary of this topic as it relates to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Communications Law Centre
An independent organisation specialising in promoting public debate of media and communications law, the CLC aims to present contemporary issues on its website. The simple layout and use of headings will help students find material. There is plenty to find; the site has extensive lists of online legislation and resources related to such topics as Free speech & defamation. One article here is a submission to the Attorney General concerning proposals for a national defamation law. In Broadcasting, another article covers commercial radio standards and case law. For Legal Studies students, the site is a treasury of links, and it demonstrates how lobby groups try to influence law makers. For English students who are investigating the media’s role and influence in society, the site offers some useful analysis and commentary on the behaviour of media operators. P. Sheppard

Designed for students, this huge and fascinating site presents
an instructive and interactive database of educational
resources across KLAs. The site’s multilingual
information includes a comparison of statistical data on UN
member states, news reports, core treaties, and briefing papers
on significant world issues such as water. A
UNwebcast shows meetings and gives a virtual
tour of the UN and its facilities. Model UN
headquarters shows students how to set up a UN club.
Ask an ambassador has a Q&A format, and is
an interesting Languages resource which currently includes
student questions and responses from the Chinese and Russian
ambassadors. Other student contributions onsite include art and
written works. With its student friendly design, contemporary
content and interactive material, the site has particular

The eleven principles that form the Data Protection
Principles are outlined at this site. Developed by the Office
of the New South Wales Privacy Commissioner, these principles
are applied when advice is sought or complaints are
investigated in organisations not covered by the Information
Protection Act. The site provides links to the information on

Family
Court reform: how I initiated four parliamentary inquiries into family
law & conquered our Family Court
The site
is a collection of slightly blurred newspaper articles on the actions of
Ian Monk and his campaign to get a Senate review of the Family Law Court
and an overhaul of the systems for divorce and custody. This is a personal
site, but beyond the emotive introduction, the media collection effectively
documents and comments on Monk’s crusade from 1988 to 2005. Students
of the Legal Studies Optional Focus Study: Family may find the site
useful, particularly regarding the effectiveness of family law and the need
for reform. The site clearly demonstrates the actions by a campaigner for
reform using a range of legal and non-legal mechanisms of change. In the
most recent news article posted, it is reported that Monk’s fight for
reform ended with the launch of a national network of 65 relationship centres

Hosted by the Harvard law school, a team facilitates collecting, synthesising, translating and republishing blogs in 16 languages for the site. It aims to promote freedom of expression and counterbalance dominant English speaking corporate media. North America and western Europe are not included. Navigation features selection by area, country or themes. Maps indicate the numbers of articles from each country and related items appear as sidebars. ABSTRACT
Written for students, the site has several sections applicable to Legal Studies Stage 6. The Legal studies research guide is designed for students preparing for the HSC and the LIAC crime library is a guide to criminal cases for use in schools. Students can register with the State Library of NSW to access Law journals to your desk andNewspaper searching from home on the site. The latter uses ANZ Newsstand. How to find a law report at the State Library of NSW is shown in Case citation. An astounding collection of resources for schools, this site is a gateway to the Internet for students and teachers learning about Aboriginal Australia, and for Aboriginal learning. The site’s homepage is a remarkable testament to the diversity of subjects, issues and topics that exist online. A comprehensive list of over 800 keywords allows easy access to research topics, including historical and contemporary material. Black Anzac: a resource collection choice is especially intriguing. Teaching Aboriginal languages is a useful national compilation of material. This site’s material has been selected as being appropriate for structured learning environments, as opposed to general learning. The site is well worth investigation by HSIE teachers in particular. The site highlights the perceived injustices that Roseanne Beckett (previously Roseanne Catt) faced at the hands of the judicial system. Beckett, charged with attempting to murder her husband, subsequently spent 10 years in gaol. The site contains a variety of scanned documents, including selected Media reports, Judgment excerpts, and a Letter from DPP, that may be of interest to those studying the Stage 6 Legal Studies Topic: Crime, if used in conjunction with further impartial information.
