Demonstrates an excellent understanding of the relationship with detailed, relevant examples 3 marks
Demonstrates a good understanding of the relationship with some examples 2 marks
Demonstrates some understanding of the relationship 1 mark

Sample answer: They like each other a lot. He describes her as intelligent, often helping him with homework, serious and kind. The friend replies that she is particularly kind to him, implying that she has a special liking for him.

Marking Criteria
Demonstrates a good understanding of how Tsuyoshi feels 2 marks
Demonstrates some understanding of how Tsuyoshi feels 1 mark

Sample answer: He has got used to it. Everyone is nice and he's made lots of friends but he was surprised at the number of students from different countries (both Asia and Europe).

Sample answer: He's really worried about his grandfather, who has had a heart condition for some time but it's recently got worse. He will have to have an operation but has to wait four months for it.

Sample answer: The father is quite conservative in his attitude to the clothes that his daughter wants to buy. He thinks that the skirt is too short; he picks out a blouse that the daughter thinks is too plain and he says that the shoes are too flashy/showy. He is being a conservative, protective father.

Demonstrates a good understanding of the tour with most details 2 marks
Demonstrates some understanding of the tour 1 mark

Sample answer: They are trying to see too much in too little time e.g. they have six days but are doing Sydney, Uluru and the Gold Coast in that time. It seems too rushed to truly see these places, which are all far apart.

Sample answer: She would be relieved that he has settled in well and that the host mother is nice. The way that he describes the house (two bathrooms, a big garden and a pool) sounds as though he is really enjoying himself and looking forward to his new life. She is a little worried about his health: she tells him not to catch a cold, as it's winter. However, overall, she would feel happy that he is OK and that he has called to tell her that he has arrived.

Sample answer: At first, she is happy to come to the party but then hears that Osamu is going to be invited. She then changes her mind, and says that she doesn't want to come if he's coming, as she thinks he is loud and tells lies, so she doesn't like him.

Sample answer: The woman is ringing to find out where the man is, as he's late. She has been waiting for more than thirty minutes. She wants him to call her on her mobile.
