Task 2.1

In a sports/travel magazine for young people:  it says “Everyone in Japan, when you come to Australia try lots of sports” 1 mark

Task 2.2

Marking Criteria

Demonstrates some understanding of what would surprise Japanese readers with examples 2 marks
Gives some specific examples of sport in Australia 1 mark

Sample Answer: Most people know that sport is popular in Australia but probably did not realise the extent of its popularity.  The fact that no matter what town you go to in Australia, there is sports’ equipment and you can see people jogging demonstrates how widespread the popularity of sport is.

In Japan, due to American influence, baseball is the most popular sport but Australia has cricket as the most popular summer sport. It is played both on the weekend and at school in break time, as well as various test matches against countries like South Africa and New Zealand. Rugby, on the other hand, is the most popular sport in winter. Perhaps Japanese would know that rugby was popular but they may not know that there are 3 different varieties of football played in Australia: League, Union and Australian Football (AFL). The article does not mention soccer.

Another fact that might surprise Japanese readers is that netball and hockey are the most popular sports for girls. Netball is almost unknown in Japan, as basketball (again from America) is played by both boys and girls.

Most people know that golf and tennis are widely played in Australia but lawn bowls is little known in Japan. Australia is famous for its water sports and bushwalks, so these 2 activities would probably not be new to the reader.
