States one speaker's plans for the future 1 mark

Sample answer: The boy is clearer, as he has long term plans. The boy wants to study art and then study Japanese art in Kyoto, whereas the girl only knows that she wants to study French at uni.

Marking Criteria
Gives an assumption, as well as the justification 2 marks
States either an assumption or a justification 1 mark

Sample answer: The male speaker appears to be lacking in money, as he says that he doesn't want a big pet because they eat a lot.

Marking Criteria
Demonstrates a good understanding of whose language skills are better with detailed justification 3 marks
Demonstrates a good understanding of whose language skills are better with an attempt at justification 2 marks
States one speaker's plans for the future 1 mark

Sample answer: Mary's Japanese is better than Simon's because she has been learning it for eight years, whereas he has only been learning it for two years. Akira's English is better than Simon's Japanese.

Demonstrates an excellent understanding of why Bill will enjoy his trip overseas 3 marks
Demonstrates a good understanding of why Bill will enjoy his trip overseas 2 marks
Demonstrates some understanding of why Bill will enjoy his trip overseas 1 mark

Sample answer: It has been a busy year and he wants to relax. He has studied Japanese for six years and will now get to go to Japan and use his Japanese. Because the air tickets have been cheap, he is also able to go on a five day Hong Kong and eight day Korea tour. All of these factors make for an enjoyable trip.
