Sample Answer: He says that he likes Japanese but he's not very good at reading and writing. She replies that he's very good at listening and speaking.

Sample answer: There has been a small traffic accident in which the back of a car was damaged but no one was hurt.

Demonstrates some understanding of their approaches to study 1 mark

Sample answer: The boy has pressure from his mother to work hard but he thinks that you should take a break sometimes. The girl doesn't actually mention study but obviously has a more relaxed attitude, as she walks and swims every morning and three times per week goes to the gym for exercise.

Gives an opinion with some attempt at justification 1 mark

Sample answer: The girl's class is selling chicken on skewers for Open Day and says to the boy that he needs to come early to buy them or they'll all be gone. This indicates that the activity will be popular.

Demonstrates a good understanding of what is being discussed with most details 3 marks
Demonstrates some understanding of what is being discussed with some details 2 marks
States what is being discussed 1 mark

Sample answer: The discussion is about where the boy should sit. The teacher is going to show a video and play some music, so she doesn't want him to sit at the back of the room. However, she suggests that he doesn't sit in the first seat, as the cassette player will be there. She prefers him to be in the second or third seat.

Demonstrates some understanding of how he is coping 1 mark

Sample answer: Kenji is having some problems understanding English, in particular understanding the history teacher. However, he copes by borrowing his classmates' exercise books after class to copy out the work.
