Task 1

Sample Answer: It took her and her friend over two and a half hours to get from Tokyo to Yokohama and they had to change trains twice. The map that she had didn’t have the bullet train on it (it was from a guide book) and her friend didn’t have a map at all. They only discovered their mistake when they got to the Shin Yokohama train station, where they saw a big map with the bullet train line on it. Fortunately, they had only bought a one way ticket, so they could go back to Tokyo on the bullet train.

Sample Answer: The passage would appear to be an extract from a letter explaining his trip to Shin Osaka. He encloses a photo, which he describes in the third paragraph.

Sample Answer:
- only free time is on Day Five (& one hour on Day Four), so it’s not for the independent traveller but gives a little freedom to do things like shopping
- eighty five thousand yen – not for students
- stay in hotels (one night in traditional inn)
- a variety of activities e.g. hot spring, Kabuki, half day tours, sumo wrestling
- a variety of places e.g. Tokyo, Yokohama, Nikko
- eat in the hotels (not for the adventurous)
- only a five day quick trip and no chance to see other parts of Japan such as Kyoto. Not for those who want to take their time
- optional tour available: does give a choice
- no Disneyland etc, so not for children
For all of the above reasons, I would recommend this tour for people with a very limited time frame who have never been to Japan before and want a “sheltered” environment with a little choice.

Sample Answer:
- the itinerary gives me some choice e.g. optional Noh performance on Day Six.
- I would enjoy the experience of staying with a host family and Days Two to Four would give me this opportunity, as well as attending a Japanese school.
- there is a bus tour of Kyoto and Nara included
- you get to see Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima which are traditional and filled with history and also Miyajima – natural beauty
- you stay in traditional inns as well which is a very important part of Japanese culture
- some meals aren’t included
- considering the amount of travel (e.g. to Hiroshima etc), it seems cheap
