Sample answer: The woman usually walks to work but came by car today as she had a lot to carry and it looked like rain. The man asks for a lift home.

Demonstrates an excellent understanding of why he would be surprised 3 marks
Demonstrates a good understanding of why he would be surprised 2 marks
Demonstrates some understanding of why he would be surprised 1 mark

Sample answer: The woman says that recently the Japanese economy has been in trouble and that Japan has the same problem (unemployment of young people) as Australia. This is not the usual perception of Japan. It is normally seen as an economic powerhouse with almost no unemployment.

Sample answer: I think she is very practical. She understands that although she wants to be able to use her Japanese in her work, it is not enough to just study Japanese - she needs another subject. Otherwise, she will have to become a teacher, which she doesn't want to do.
