Activity 3

  1. Look at previous HSC exams and find any questions to do with calculating image size and work through the calculations.

  2. Describe the different types of media that a designer could use in a multimedia presentation, and discuss factors that may affect the choice of a multimedia portfolio over a paper-based one.

Some examples of various media that could be used in a multimedia presentation include:
    • graphics: static graphic images. these will probably be GIFs, jpegs or png. These are common formats which will provide small file sizes but good quality images. If the images contain transparency it will most likely be a GIF. While pngs do contain transparency browsers don't appear to support this file type. If the image is a photo then probably a jpeg or png.
    • animation: animations are cell based or path based. Cell based involve the use of many still images to create a sense of movement such as in animated GIFs. Path based are created using a drawn path for an object to move along and a timeline such as Flash animations.
    • video: A video is a movie. Quicktime and realtime are good compressed movie formats.
    • audio: sound files

There are many advantages of a multimedia portfolio over a paper based one including:
    • ease of modifying the document when changes are necessary. If it was paper it would involve photocopying and printing as well and messes are the page structures.
    • multimedia is far more immersive. If interaction is included then the user is able to maneuver around the program as they see fit
    • The use of simulations and demonstrations of products, skills and examples of previous work. A paper based portfolio cannot demonstrate. Paper based materials can only point to other sources and describe.
