The Information Communication and Technology industry is well known for its breadth and diversity. It is a dynamic area and students are well advised to read widely for current trends and emerging technologies.
The two broad categories for the ICT workforce are:
There are a number of vocational specialisations in the ICT environment including: support, website development, networking, programming, testing, systems analysis and design, multimedia, project management, systems administration, database design and development and network security.
ICT Vocational Specialisations
| Role | Key responsibilities |
|---|---|
| Desktop publisher | Produces professionally designed and presented documents, according to specified design and presentation requirements, using desktop publishing software. |
| Hardware technician | Establishes the network including network cabling, installing workstations and setting up printers and other peripheral devices. |
| Help desk operator | This person accepts problem reports from users related to all aspects of IT. The coordinator either assists users with more complex problems or sends the problem call to the relevant individual within the IT department. |
| ICT manager | This is the key role in the ICT department. Responsible for the entire ICT department and manages all ICT staff. |
| ICT trainer | Delivers training to end users in the organisation about how to use various types of programs efficiently and effectively in support of business objectives. Responsible for designing, delivering, and improving in-house software applications training programs and related courseware. |
| Multimedia developer | Provides media development services for projects, products and applications across the enterprise, including designing, building, and implementing new multimedia pages, graphics, and CD-ROMs; and performing day-to-day administration of the organisation’s multimedia portfolio. |
| Programmer | Designs, writes, tests and documents computer programs. |
| Project manager | This is a key role in both the ICT department and the ICT consulting organisation, managing a team working on a specific ICT project. The project manager manages specific ICT projects such as creating new software or developing an internet site. |
| Systems analyst | Analyses and documents the flow of information in existing computer systems and designs information flows for new computer systems. |
| Network administrator | Implements the network, sets up and manages user accounts, installs software on the network, backs up files and maintains network security. |
| Software developer | Designs, executes, assesses, and troubleshoots software programs and applications. This includes configuring, coding, developing and documenting software specifications. |
| Web designer | Designs and develops an organisation’s intranet sites and the organisation’s internet Web site. |
