Brief summaries of the latest world news and major Indonesian news stories are provided in sophisticated Bahasa Indonesia at this site. Invaluable resources are provided here for the contemporary issues components in the Background Speakers course of the Indonesian: Stage 6 syllabus, and for advanced material in this area of the Continuers course. Most non background speakers would require considerable help understanding the vocabulary and the background to the stories. There is variety in the language used in different reports relating to a particular event. After 9:30 am, users can obtain the previous and current day’s news. Fairly fast paced male and female newsreaders present the bulletin. K. Anstis

BolaNews sportsline - Indonesian sportnews (external website)
The language used is straightforward and reasonably formal in this well organised electronic version of the sports magazine, Bola. Key terms are easy to grasp, as is a little sports slang. Bulutangkis,Tinju, Tenis, and Basket, for example, lead to information in Indonesian on each of the sports. The latest soccer information can be found in either Ole! Internasional or Ole! Nasional. Articles are generally quite short, and sometimes a few statistics are given. Users can participate in the vote for top athletes, thereby using Indonesian to communicate, and a search engine allows access to back issues. The site could be used to develop students’ understanding of the cultural contexts in which Indonesian is used and apply Indonesian to leisure interests. K. Anstis

Inside Indonesia: widely read, inside and out! (external website)
The superb quarterly magazine on which this site is based is invaluable to all those interested in issues confronting Indonesia today. The site provides a comprehensive index to major issues dealt with in the magazines from 1984 onwards, along with a search engine allowing access to the magazine’s archives. The articles, generally written by a group of Australian based contributors, are informative and thought provoking. A list of provocative opinion pieces written by the editor is indexed and available in Digest. The self correcting, interactive exercises, based on the Indonesian language inserts from the latest magazines, should be particularly useful for Indonesian Stage 6 Continuers students. K. Anstis

Clear, uncluttered maps of Indonesia as a whole, and separate maps of Java, Bali; Lombok, and Sumatra, are presented, together with a small selection of beautiful slides and interesting information concerning travel arrangements and attractions. All the information is in English. Other icons lead to advertisements for the complete Lonely Planet guides; other publications; and recent Travellers' reports on Indonesia, which are generally unverified. The latter are a great source of fresh ideas for content for traveller abroad writing skills. Excellent reference material for all Indonesian students is provided. K. Anstis

A wide variety of traditional medicines, grouped according to whether they are for men, for women or for both sexes, are mentioned on this easily navigated site. The language used in all sections of the site would be accessible to students of the Indonesian: Stage 6 syllabus (approved 1999) Continuers course. The site would support students investigating issues such as leisure and lifestyle, and reconciling modern and traditional values in a changing Indonesia. Students could consider the target market for the products and critically assess the way the products are being advertised. K. Anstis

Learn a little about the elephants of Way Kambas National Park, appreciate the culture of Lampung province through its museum and the buildings on display in Taman Mini, and discover the attractions of nearby Krakatau, though this site. Information in this easily navigated site is often brief, and would generally be accessible to students of the Indonesian: Stage 6 syllabus Continuers course. Kliping provides a variety of articles that show the strategy employed for conservation and tourism in this park, which is very different from that guiding the usage of Kerinci Seblat National Park. Students could use this site when exploring the impact of development on the environment and tourism in Indonesia. There is an English version of all sections except Kliping. K. Anstis
