Isolation and loneliness

The role of the family

Analysis

The scene begins with Yudha climbing the ladder of the water tower to join Rena. She explains that the water tower is her special place, the place she goes to be alone, to daydream or when feeling sad. When Yudha asks her why she feels sad, she replies ‘When I think about Nana, ibu, … ayah’ and her voice wistfully trails off.

Yudha asks if she would like to jalan-jalan with him, as the other kids are busy helping Bu Tia in the kitchen. This is the first time they spend together, just the two of them.

The rural atmosphere is accentuated by the background noises of birds chirping and roosters crowing. The background music starts softly, a solo guitar playing a gentle and sentimental melody which fades as their conversation becomes more personal. At this stage the two characters are framed individually, highlighting their separateness.
