Sites are listed alphabetically by title. Those reviews which note links to other sites, especially as a major part of the site, will require additional exploration time by teachers to verify specific curriculum applications relevant to their classes. The USER LEVEL descriptor, Professional, is a pertinent reminder of such issues. Please note that changes happen daily on the Internet. Sites come and go. A brief history of (just) in time: just in time, Toyota
production system & lean manufacturing ![]()
Explaining the history and process of the lean manufacturing strategy, this site aims to give site users ideas on Developing your own manufacturing strategy.
It will be useful for Business Studies teachers seeking practical illustrations
for the study of control of current assets. Of special note is the concise
explanation of the evolvement of lean manufacturing from the Toyota Motor Companys
development of their Just in time production (JIT) approach. Here, the Toyota
production system and Inventory will allow students to research the conditions needed for the JIT system to be effective. The ideas of Whitney, Taylor, Deming and Henry Ford, as regards the development of JIT, are introduced. Resources has a superb range of material for technology and business teachers, including automotive content, case studies, and videos. N. McFayden

site: Frank Lloyd Wright building code ![]()
One of the most important aspects of education is to incorporate relevance
into teaching experiences. This resource provides information and educational
links based on one of the world’s most influential urban designers, Frank
Lloyd Wright. Students will be informed about how local and global environments,
and materials used, affect design solutions in relation to architecture, furniture
design, and technology. Linked lesson resources will enable students to investigate
the use of the design process, identify factors affecting design and to develop
ideas on presenting design solutions and ideas. Although the content applies
to American examples of architecture, the principles and processes can be easily
translated into NSW classrooms. B. Maher

Architect Studio 3D ![]()
An interactive student centred resource, this site is in line with architectural
and engineering based design concepts that can be applied to Design and Technology
and Industrial Technology syllabuses. Students can develop their knowledge of
drawing concepts by using standards. They can explore spatial relationships and
architectural designs by completing interactive activities, such as designing
floor plans and three dimensional models of houses. These activities are based
on identified criteria, such as who the house is being built for and where it
will be located. Extension activities can be created from design based activities,
which require students to engage in the design process and to scaffold their
production of design ideas and presentation. This site can be slow to load, but
the 3D tools more than compensate for the wait. B. Maher

Architecture
: traditional and modern
With an
emphasis on traditional architecture, this site provides details
on the designs used in structures and styles, including the
materials used and the reason behind the shapes used. Images are
plentiful and inspiring. Technology students can research
Measurements and Tools, and
complete supported research projects on wood construction. In
Teaching materials, a Webquest
adventure based on traditional architecture will help
Technology students achieve outcomes related to research and
communication of ideas. Images and information on seventeen
World cultural heritage sites will support
Geography students completing Investigating the world.
The site will also assist teachers in addressing multicultural
influences on architecture within Australian society. B.

ASEE Engineering K12 Center: where to go for K-12 engineering education
It is great to see a site that demonstrates the diversity of study and practice options in engineering. Careers are explained in The engineering alphabet. Careers advisors can benefit from the site as it has downloadable pamphlets on the various fields of engineering and possible career paths. Students will be able to determine whether engineering studies are right for them by taking a series of online quizzes which ask questions about the way they think and learn. Teachers can access a large library of lesson activities and web resources to produce lessons that promote problem solving and teamwork in pairs or large groups. B. Maher

Building and construction toolbox ![]()
Building techniques and workplace related topics are interestingly presented in this resource. The site is very easy to navigate with an interactive site supervisor to show students how to get the most from the website. Colourful, carton style graphics support the written text in explaining different aspects of the construction industry, and interactive quizzes help reinforce concepts taught. The site covers workplace communication, carpentry, plastering, tiling, painting, bricklaying, and demolition. OH&S forms an element of each topic. The site is current, informative and pleasant to use, making it particularly suitable for TAS and VET students. A. Parnis

Friends of the High Line ![]()
A community group in New York City is dedicated to developing a recreational facility from a disused historic rail structure and this website looks at their vision. A brief history of the location, maps of the scheme, videos of the project, development proposals and historical footage of the railway are included. The website also features links to a number of similar projects that have been undertaken in America and Europe. These indicate successful upgrades of derelict elevated railway sections. National safety: official website for
the National Safety Council of Australia
This large, comprehensive site may be useful for the study of
workplace communication and occupational health and safety within
the Industrial Technology: Stage 6 syllabus. The monthly
magazine, National safety, provides the user with access
to selected, topical articles. Each issue has information
concerning safety issues. Within Safety News, Archive
allows access to the edition from the previous month. Some
articles could be used by Information Processes and
Technology: Stage 6 syllabus students. There are also links
to safety, and safety and health resources which would require
further research to verify their curriculum relevance. P.

A written introduction from a
Captain welcoming us aboard this web site is a friendly touch
that is echoed in the site's style and
content. Flying graphics over an aerial shot of an airport
facility form an entry platform into six areas of employment. The
site covers work in Terminal services,
Aircrew, and Training, and the
more technical choices of Avionics,
Mechanical maintenance, and Structural
maintenance. The site suits careers browsers rather than
those seeking solid information. Adequate job descriptions are
given in an informal tone, but specifics, such as wage and
training information, are not provided. E. Kesby
