Background

Correct handling of materials is paramount for ensuring a safe working environment. When handling materials one should consider the properties of the material as well as the correct method for their lifting and movement. Material handling in the workplace is an important issue that must to be considered in all focus areas.

Activity 1

Handling hazardous materials

Hazardous materials used in the workplace need to be effectively identified and handled to ensure safe working conditions.

Go to the Hazardous substances section (external website) of the Safe Work Australia web site and read about hazardous substances in the work place, prior to answering the following questions.

  1. Describe the problems that can result from the incorrect handling of hazardous materials.
  2. Identify specific materials that are considered to be hazardous in the work place.
  3. Describe the criteria for classifying a material as being hazardous.
  4. Outline the information that is contained in Material Safety Data Sheets.
  5. Identify the easiest way of determining if a material is a potential hazard.
  6. Outline ways in which hazardous materials can enter ones body if they are not correctly handled.
  7. Identify and describe the type of equipment that should be worn when handling hazardous materials.
