Glossary of Terms

Browser A software program which allows a person to visit sites on the World Wide Web and read hypertext.
Client A program which requests services of another program. Normally, the browser is a client of a data server.
Database A collection of information that is organised into records, so that it can be easily accessed, managed and updated.
Download To retrieve a file from one computer system to another.
FAQ Frequently Asked Questions. A document that covers common questions and answers for a particular subject area.
Home page Main page of a Web site. A Web site containing only one page, is also called a home page.
Host The server on which a Web site is stored
Hypertext Hypertext link or Hyperlink is a text-linking strategy that lets you jump between related information in a document by clicking on a button or highlighted word.
Internet The Internet is the actual network of networks where all the information resides.
Check The World Wide Web - The Internet
Netiquette It is the "etiquette on the Internet". It refers to an informal code of conduct that governs what is generally considered to be the acceptable way for users to interact with one another online.
Server A program which provides a service to another, known as the client.
URL The Uniform Resource Locator is the address of a file acessible on the internet. The URL of the HSC home page is: htpp://hsc.csu.edu.au Selecting this link will take you to an external site. .
Web Page One single document on the Web.
Web Site A collection of Web pages
WWW The World Wide Web, or just "the Web," consists of Web pages that can be accessed with a Web browser.
