Sample answer:
I think he was a very strange and lonely man, as he preferred being alone in his romantic castles or in the quietness of nature than being with other people. He was also stubborn, as he was determined to spend more money on his castles, even though his advisors were against it.

Sample answer:
In the past Karin could get work as a Polish interpreter, as there was more business contact with Poland. Now the focus has shifted away from the former Eastern block countries, so she has less work. She has had to sell her car because she couldn’t afford to run it anymore, and finds public transport unsafe so mostly stays at home.

Sample answer:
Grandfather left school at fourteen to take up an apprenticeship. Leaving school at fourteen would be unusual today. He worked long hours for not much money (it took him six years to save up enough to buy a car with a friend!). Nowadays the working week is shorter and one can earn more. In his free-time, he listened to the radio, or played cards at the pub. Nowadays people prefer going to restaurants and can watch TV or rent DVDs whenever they want – in colour!

Demonstrates some understanding of the speaker’s observations. 1 mark

Sample answer:
In 1987 there were barbed wire and guard towers everywhere, and they were watched the whole time they played football by East German guards. Now there is no sign that a wall, the towers or the soldiers ever existed. You can drive anywhere you want.
