| Demonstrates a good understanding of how Anna feels, with attempted justifications and reference to the text | 2 marks |
| Demonstrates some understanding of how Anna feels | 1 mark |
Sample answer:
Anna is feeling very defensive about her decision to leave
school. She won't talk to her parents about it. She feels
as though she can't cope with school any more. Even
though her parents and teachers think that she is making a
mistake, Anna won't listen to anyone. This could mean
that she is very stubborn, or that she is very sure of her
decision. I believe that she is stubborn, because she would
listen and talk to people who are concerned about her
otherwise.

I think he should buy the car so he can be independent
– he hates asking his parents if he can borrow their
car. Although the car is a bit of a bomb, it’s cheap
and he can fix the rust himself. He’s also prepared to
learn how to do other repairs.
OR
I don’t think he should buy the car. Even though the
price is good, it’s full of rust and could be hard to
repair and he’ll have to learn how to make repairs
himself. It would make more sense to continue to borrow his
parents’ car, even though he doesn’t like asking
them. He seems to be letting his heart rule his head!
