Task 2

In this question you are required to read an advertisement for a travel magazine. You have to show you understand this written text by identifying and analysing the relevant information contained in it. You then have to write a travel report of 150—200 words in German.

The question provided you with:

• a purpose: a travel report
• a context: an inexpensive, adventure-type or "different" holiday to appeal to the readership
• an audience: young, educated people who like action holidays but have a limited budget

To answer this question you should write an account of an appropriate* holiday which includes:

• where you went (this should also include where you stayed)
• how you planned the trip
• your experiences - the good and the bad
• whether you went on your own or with others
• whether you would recommend this trip.

If you are including photographs with your report, you might also make a mention of them.

Although the points given follow the order in which the issues were raised in the text, you do not necessarily have to use the same order in your response. However, you must ensure that your answer flows logically.

*Note: A report based on a luxury holiday or expensive accommodation would have not addressed the correct audience or have used the correct context.

Task 3

In this question you are provided with two documents:

1. a letter from a partner class in Hessen, Germany
2. a brochure pointing out what there is to see and do in Hessen

Your task is to write to your partner class after your stay in Germany, saying how much you enjoyed the aspects set out in the tourist brochure, as well as your overall stay in Germany. You are not writing a response to the letter provided.

You have to write a letter of 150-200 words in German. The question provides you with:

• a purpose: a letter in response to hospitality
• a context: the brochure provides information about the state you visited in Germany
• an audience: your exchange partners

To answer this question you should use an informal style and include the appropriate letter format. You would address your partner school classmates as “ihr”, as you are writing to more than one person. Your letter should be written in the past tense, since it refers to what you experienced while you were in Germany.

You should keep in mind that you are being assessed on the relevance of your response. Your answer should include:

• an introductory paragraph:
  • establishing the context, letting your partner class know you have arrived safely back in Australia
  • thanking your partner class for their hospitality during your stay
  
  
• comments and responses to the following (in any order):
  • the landscapes of Hessen e.g. forests
  • the traditions of Hessen
  • the castles you saw
  • the cities you visited
  • what you particularly enjoyed
  • an anecdote about a highlight of your trip
  
  
• a concluding paragraph:
  • restating your thanks
  • perhaps inviting your partner class to Australia
