Thousands of amazing panoramic photographs of cities, countries, landscapes and icons from around the world are accessible on this site. Students can browse by place and by a world map, where specific locations can be opened. Google Earth features with interactive map controls enhancing the viewer’s engagement, satellite and terrain photographs, and maps and hybrids being easily used. Photographs are by professional photographers who know how to compose a shot and maximise the panoramic effect. The potential for education is astounding: the works could be useful for photographic students; landform searches will promote geographical understanding; and creative writing would be greatly stimulated by the site’s range of dramatic photographs. Australia’s
world heritage – location map
The 16 Australian properties on the World
Heritage List are clearly shown on a map of Australia. The
format for each heritage site opens pages of clearly written
explicit text with several colourful, labelled photographs from
the site. A brief introduction is followed by bullet points,
highlighting its outstanding Values, which are
the reason for inclusion on the world list. Clicking on the
map, or on the name in the list, such as Shark
Bay, Western
Australia values, gives information
on the zoological importance of its largely undisturbed
peninsula and island habitats. The diversity of its vegetation,
avifauna, reptiles and amphibians, endangered mammals and
marine fauna make interesting reading. Information on
Shark Bay and Map of Shark Bay are
informative pdf files to download. Clear navigation tools
direct the user to the other 15 sites and to background

Using Flash 6,
this extraordinary site is an interactive
Timeline and research tool for exploring
some of the constructions, landscapes, and people that have
shaped American cities and landscapes over the last 300
years. Historical and contemporary buildings are depicted by
photograph and essay, giving site users an appreciation of
all aspects of the built environment, past and future. The
site is broad in scope and includes domestic icons, famous
buildings, The African American experience,
The car and the built environment, and
Bridging the gap, which allows students to
design a bridge. Students can access particular topics at
specific points in time, obtaining concise information and

example of web based multimedia, but it does take some time
to load, making it difficult to use in a class environment.

Clearly presented and fascinating information on China can be gleaned from this site. Written support for a PBS broadcast, the site describes each of the four episodes with in-depth sections, an opinion piece, and a transcript of a discussion about the episode. The main topics in the episodes are democracy, AIDS, the environment, water, population, freedom and justice, censorship, and an excellent profile of some leading female activists. The site’s topics are complemented by large photographs, interactive maps, and PDF lesson plans. There are helpful links for further research. A very useful resource when studying contemporary China in several syllabuses, the site will be particularly appreciated by Society and Culture Stage 6 students investigating China in the Core: Social and cultural continuity and change, and by Geography Stage 6 students looking at China within the Topic: Global challenges. A great deal of care, time and money has gone into the creation of this extraordinary site. A large amount of absorbing information is carefully arranged into headings such as Geological processes and structures, Energy and minerals, Flooding, and Fossils/time/space. Within these, topics are very easily accessed and students will appreciate the clear explanations, animations, and terrific imagery. The site is worth visiting for the diagrams alone. They are mostly simple line drawings but they communicate extremely well; the diagrams distinguishing P and S earthquake waves could be the clearest on the internet. The site includes information about landforms in Land, endangered animals in Plants and animals, local issues and opportunities in Pollution and recycling, Water wetlands and catchments, local Heritage sites and Weather and climate statistics. A link to the local council website is useful, and a map puts the generated report into an interesting geographical context. Database sources are shown in More about my environment. The water cycle ![]()
Water science basics are shown here in thorough diagrams and easy to read summaries. Major aspects of the water cycle are clearly explained and vocabulary in articles often leads to expanded explanations in other water cycle topics, including Precipitation, Ground water storage, and Surface runoff. Each related topic features a brief definition followed by well illustrated and understandable content. The options of Quick summary or Complete summary facilitate the adaptation of information for interest and ability levels and increase the site’s relevance for a number of syllabuses. Although some statistics are dated and predominately based on American examples, the format, content and other features of the site will ensure that it is a valued and well used resource. J. Hawkes

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification
The battle to combat land degradation and desertification around the world is explored on this site. It could be effectively used to support the study of Geography 7–10 Focus Areas and numerous areas of the Stage 6 Geography syllabus, especially the Topics: Ecosystems at risk and People and economic activity. After navigating an initially complex homepage, a wealth of information can be accessed through Publications. Teachers will find an online Interactive education kit, fact sheets, case studies, a simplified version of the convention, and various online and print resources. Case studies within the kit that are related to soil degradation through runoff and land management would be of use to teachers of theEarth and Environmental Science Module: Water issues. C. Beckett

Vital water graphics: an overview of the state of the world’s fresh and marine waters ![]()
Based on a 2002 United Nations study, this impressively visual water study uses graphs, maps, and diagrams to illustrate growing concerns about climate change and water issues. The effects of water usage, trends and threats to water resources are discussed, as are biodiversity, species distribution, and population changes. Strategies for the management of water resources are outlined. Freshwater resources identifies quantity and distribution, explains the water cycle, and shows the relationship between precipitation, evaporation and runoff. Coastal and marine waters looks at integrating management of water resources, the protection of marine environments, and the monitoring of changes in ecosystems and climate. Quality diagrams and explanations provide valuable support for the study of water resources and management research in the Geography syllabuses. The site is especially useful for the Geography Stage 6 Topic: Ecosystems at risk and the Earth and Environmental Science Topic: Water issues. J. Hawkes & A. Frost

Who’s
afraid of nuclear power? ![]()
A broadband
edition of the TV report, this site investigates nuclear power as an option
for Australia. A menu allows navigation to chapters on historical and environmental
aspects of the Australian debate, discussion on renewable energy resources,
and case studies on wind energy and nuclear waste. Chapters are in small
blocks of time, making them useful as lesson support. Issues are clarified
by the use of Danish and Swedish examples, and interviews with experts in the
field. Web resources provides a comprehensive set of reports and additional resources
on the topic. The program runs well on one computer, and teachers would need
to test technical suitability for screening with large groups. B. Smith
