In the option strand, Contemporary food issues - Nutrition, you will study influences on nutritional status. One of those influences is lifestyle. An aspect of lifestyle is an individual's level of physical activity. Athletes are a group who have special dietary needs because of their level of physical activity. The dietary needs will vary according to age, sex, type of training and the level of competition the athlete is involved in. The material on this page is designed to give you resources to plan diets and prepare foods to meet the dietary requirements of athletes. If you are investigating the health of a group of people in Australia you may find the resources at the end of this tutorial useful.
Outcomes
This material addresses aspects of the following syllabus outcomes:
H2.1 The student evaluates the relationship between food, its
production, consumption, promotion and health.
H5.1 The student develops, realises and evaluates solutions for
a range of food situations.

The Nutrition for athletes case study provides information on the dietary needs and sample evening meals of a female gymnast, a marathon runner, a male swimmer in training and a female swimmer during competition. Each athlete has different energy requirements because of the nature of their sport.
Sporting identities have become popular media personalities and are
often used in advertising to promote products. Food producers in particular
have been keen to use athletes. The Uncle
Toby's
site has a section called Training with the stars.
Here you can get tips from people like Sam Riley, Trevor Hendy and Lisa
Curry.
Explain how advertising using sports stars on the Uncle Toby's site may influence attitudes towards foods.
