Key terms and concepts

Key term or concept Definition
awards The work conditions and pay rate for each specific industry. Awards are negotiated between unions and employers and are enforceable by the Industrial Relations Commission.
communication channels Ways information, messages and ideas can be exchanged.
current issues Problems or ideas which have an impact on the industry and are being discussed at the present time, eg global warming.
economic impact The monetary effect of the industry – for example on communities, companies and workers.
employer associations Groups of employers who operate in the same or similar industries.
enterprise/organisation protocols/ policies A set of rules, specific to and industry or organisation, stating the procedures or practices to be followed.
entertainment industry A large and varied industry encompassing live performances, corporate theatre, radio, film and television and live events.
industrial relations issues Matters which relate to working conditions and pay rates.
industry associations Groups representing the interests of people (employers or employees) working in a particular industry or trade.
industry bodies Groups within industry associations representing a specific area or interest.
industry structure The entertainment industry is made up of a large number of sectors, eg live theatre, corporate event management.
roles and responsibilities A role is an actual job, eg a fly person. A responsibility is what the person doing the job actually does, eg a fly person operates the counterweight system.
sectors Different areas of the industry, eg the opera sector and the trade show sector.
sources of information Where information can be obtained. This includes things such as books, journals, websites or people working in the industry.
union An association representing employees with the power to negotiate with employers on behalf of the employees.
working conditions The environment in which an individual works, eg their hours of work, pay, protective clothing, and rest breaks.
workplace relations Refers to issues affecting the relationship between employers and employers. It is governed by both Federal and State authorities.
