Name: Eva Hanly
Age: 26
Employer: Evans & Peck
Position in company: Senior Consultant
Job description: I work in a variety of fields within the engineering and construction sectors helping clients solve problems. I have undertaken work for the Airforce, for a major hospital, for the NSW RTA, for rail companies, and for other private and public sector companies. This has given me exposure to a huge range of different companies, people, problems and projects.
Qualifications: Honours degree in Engineering (UNSW), Bachelor of Arts in Politics and International Relations (UNSW), currently studying Master of Business Administration (AGSM).
Best thing about the job: Meeting a wide range of people and having diverse work. I am never bored. Also I enjoy the variety — one day I could be on an air force base, another at a rail terminal in Queensland and another day in an office in Sydney. There are so many challenges and I am always using my brain. I also enjoy seeing the outcomes of what I do. I feel that engineers actually can make a positive difference in our society, it is a profession that matters.
Worst thing about the job: Sometimes going to a new client can be daunting, I may not have worked in that industry before but really this only adds to the excitement.
Strangest thing you’ve had to do: With a previous employer, I worked in Central America for three months. Learning Spanish and trying to work in a different culture was definitely unusual!
When you were at school, did you plan to do this type of work? No, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. I knew that I wanted to have a job that mattered and made a difference and one that I could travel with. I knew that I didn’t want to sit in an office doing the same thing every day. Engineering seemed like it could offer me that — and it has!
